The Truth to the Rumors The Acolyte Has Already Been Canceled Before the Season Finale (2024)
The Acolyte is another installment in Disney+’s expansive Star Wars universe offering, set 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace. It’s been well-received by critics but absolutely trashed by audiences, with an average of 1.5 stars on Google Reviews. Does that mean it’s been canceled before it’s even finished its season 1 run? There are lots of rumors to unpack.
The speculation first started on That Park Place, with an unnamed source supposedly from LucasFilm saying, “Leslye Headland’sThe Acolyteis DoA [dead on arrival]. Unless there’s a miracle of ratings, this is a one-and-done proposition.” He explained, “It looks to me like John Knoll is no longer going to be actively meeting with Headland to collaborate on S2.” (We’re not sure how this particular outlet vets their sources, FYI).
The insider said that the show’s alleged cancellation wasn’t because of “aggressive trolls” that flooded the trailer on YouTube with negative comments and more than half a million dislikes. “For now the negative reaction for the trailer is being labeled as aggressive trolls irrelevant to the market,” they said.
Not officially, no—Disney+ has neither confirmed nor denied the show will continue. Showrunner Leslye Headland may have hinted at the existence of a second season when she revealed that a major plot point—the Sith Lord—had been reserved for season 2 but the actor’s screentest was so good, they fast-tracked it.
“This is an interesting tidbit: Originally, even up until shooting, The Stranger was not in a lot of the rest of the season. He was much more of a tee-up for a second-season arc,” she told Inverse. “But I saw Manny [Jacinto]’s screen test early on in pre-production, and I just thought, ‘There will be riots in the streets if I don’t [go further]. Here we go. I guess I’m rewriting an episode.’ Manny was so impressive in every aspect.
There’s another way to interpret this, though. Headland could also be saying that a season 2 no longer exists, which is why they bumped up the big reveal.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly in an interview published on June 27, Headland used the word “if” when discussing The Acolyte season 2. “[Qimir] wants freedom to be able to be who he is and wield his power the way he wants to. But he also wants freedom on a second level that I think we’ll get more into if we get a season 2.”
She continued: “I’ll tell you my philosophy on first seasons. Something that I’ve noticed is first seasons will end on what should have been the break into Act Two. It feels like everyone’s really expecting to get a second season, and I don’t feel that’s a good idea,” she said.
“I think you should put everything you can into the first season and give the audience a nice resolution that feels satisfying, but enough nods to mysteries that you would want to see a second season. So it’s a little bit of both. You don’t want to leave it so wrapped up that, likeObi-Wanor a standalone mini-series, that there’s no reason to watch a second season, but I think there’s enough stuff in the last few episodes that you would want to have answered.”
In conversation with the Nerdist, Headland wasn’t even sure when a second season would be greenlit, “I have no idea. Well, not that I have no idea. I would say there are conversations. And I don’t know when that will happen. I don’t know when that decision will be made.”
The Acolyte is available to stream on Disney+ with new episodes dropping each Tuesday.
The first season of the Disney+ television series “The Acolyte” ends on a triumphant moment for the Sith. Manny Jacinto's Sith Lord known as the Stranger (or Qimir as he's called before his Sith reveal) has successfully gained a student to teach in all things the dark side.
So of course there were things that I didn't get to explore.” Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, and Amandla Stenberg on 'The Acolyte'. But there were bigger fish to fry, and bigger characters to incorporate, most notably the finale cameos of Darth Plagueis and Yoda, representing the higher echelons of dark and light power.
But at the time of writing, Lucasfilm and Disney+ have yet to confirm whether the series will be renewed. Showrunner Leslye Headland confirmed The Acolyte's uncertain future herself in talking with Nerdist, admitting she has "no idea" about the chances for a Season 2.
What's more, Reeves is still not officially attached to the production. So, for now, Keanu Reeves is not in The Acolyte, although it's possible that the Hollywood icon did indeed shoot a cameo that Lucasfilm is keeping under wraps.
Plagueis appears briefly in The Acolyte finale, and is thought to be the Master of Qimir (Manny Jacinto). Plagueis will likely influence Osha, who has just turned to the Dark Side, and the three evildoers will eventually pave the way to Palpatine's rise.
Darth Sidious, publicly known as Sheev Palpatine from Naboo, became the Dark Lord of The Sith after betraying and murdering his Sith Master Darth Plagueis.
Is Grogu Yoda? According to the events of "The Mandalorian" so far, Grogu and Yoda are not the same character. They are simply from the same species. The name of this species has never been revealed since "Star Wars" creator George Lucas wanted to give Yoda a sense of mystery.
Luke Skywalker trained Grogu in the ways of the Force, but gave him a choice: become a Jedi or return to Din Djarin to become a Mandalorian. The orphan chose the latter and accompanied Din Djarin on his new adventures in the galaxy far, far away. At the end of season 3, however, he was formally adopted by Mando.
Luke Skywalker eventually had the lightsaber in his possession after Yoda's death in 4 ABY. Five years later, he offered the weapon to Grogu in a choice against obtaining beskar armor. However, Grogu chose the beskar armor over the lightsaber and went back to Din Djarin.
Disney+ has not renewed The Acolyte for a second season. However, series showrunner Leslye Headland said there have been “conversations” about continuing the show past season one. When recently asked by Nerdist if she knew whether The Acolyte was getting renewed for a second season, she answered “no.”
“Acolyte” derives from a Greek term, akolouthos, which means “server,” “companion,” or “follower.” In the Roman Catholic Church, a person is installed in the ministry of Acolyte in order to assist the deacon and the priest in liturgical celebrations, especially the Eucharistic Liturgy.
Children and youth from 10 to 18 are welcome to serve as acolytes. Most start as a Junior Acolyte, processing the Gospel book at the 10 a.m. service. Once in Middle School, you can assume the responsibility of a Torch Bearer for the 10 a.m. service.
The Acolyte has now come to an end on Disney Plus with a dramatic finale tying up almost all of the loose ends of the Star Wars series. The fates of the major characters were revealed, huge lightsaber showdowns took place, and there were even some major cameos.
A month after dropping a new sneak peek for season 2 of Severance, Apple TV+ has revealed that viewers will finally get to watch the 10-episode new season of Severance beginning on Jan. 17, 2025 with the premiere episode. One episode will be released every Friday through March 21.
