So I’m thinking about upgrading from mv to mz. Anyone who’s used mv knows that when you run your game in full screen it becomes blurry. This is especially noticeable with low res pixel art games. I’ve tried everything to get rid of the blur with no success.

Can someone who’s used mv and is aware of this issue confirm that it’s been fixed in mz?

it becomes blurry.

what you see as "blur" is no blur in reality, but a result of the interpolation while increasing the screen size to fullscreen.

Let's make a simple example: you have a 2-pixel picture of one white and one black pixel, and you want to zoom it to 150% or three pixel.
The left pixel will remain white, the right pixel will remain black, but what to do with the new, middle pixel?
The interpolation formula used for zooming decides what color the new pixel should be. That is the reason why good image programs allow you to select different mathematics on resizing, each formula has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Some formula use an average color - the center pixel turns grey. THAT is what looks like a blur to people, but in reality it is a mixed color line between the different colors, not a real blur.
Other formula use one of the pixel colors next to the new pixel, either black or white. That will keep the border between the pixels sharp, but it will also distort the picture - it now has one white and two black pixels for example, the divider is no longer in the middle.

The only way to make a clear zoom is to have the zoom a full multiple (100%, 200%, 300%,...) because only then there are no mixed pixel positions that require guessing for a color to place.
And that only works for specific sizes, not every different monitor size out there.

This effect has nothing to do with the RPG-Makers, it is one of the inherent facts of 2D-picture resizing. Other games only go around it by having multiple size versions of each picture for multiple resolutions (or by using 3D instead of 2D).

So no, MZ CANNOT remove the effect as it cannot change the physical laws of the universe.
You can only try to find the best interpolation formula (there is a reason why professional image programs like Photoshop are expensive, they are trying to improve those formulae).

Thanks for that explanation Andar. I was already aware of how image scaling works but I was missing the obvious fact that my monitors native resolution doesn’t match my games resolution. For some reason it wasn’t clicking with me that the widowed game was the true resolution and that fullscreen was scaling it up.

With all that said, do you have any advice for what resolution I should use to make my game look as good as possible on whatever device its running on?

I feel so dumb. I had my display settings in windows set to scale by 150%. That was causing my game to scale by an uneven amount no matter my resolution.

Thanks again for your help Adar. This thread can be closed.

A bunch of music tracks in the DLC folder of MV sound really cool, and I found out some of them are redone versions of tracks from 2k3, that's pretty neat.
While I want to make as many original tracks as possible for my game, I'm probably gonna use some of these.

I made my game a little bit easier. But it is still quite difficult since I made my enemies buff each other and heal each other when they need it. These are my favorite battle systems.

Wizardry 8 had a pretty cool enemy called a Swallower. It was fairly hard to kill, depending on your party level, and on certain successful hits, it would swallow a party member and they would disappear from combat. They took damage each round, couldn't act, and they could only be recovered by killing the Swallower. Ah, good times.

Since the Four Usurpers each have a special kinda smaller map, and I am doing SRPG combat anyway, each map can just be part of what makes fighting them unique and interesting. The Floating Continent is already a fun possibility where you have to run from cover and take potshots before you can finally climb up to engage the boss with melee.
