We may just be a little (ok, a lot) excited about the fact that COLOR is going to be BIG for weddings in 2024/25. So, we knew that we wanted to create something colorful for this DIY. We started by finding a DIY floral kit from FiftyFlowers that spoke to us, and we fell in LOVE with the Ethereal Garden Flower Combo Pack. We decided to use these pretty pastels as the jumping-off point for our color palette and went with a rainbow color block design.

step-by-step guide

  1. Cut your foam to size (remember, make it a smidge smaller than your vase, as the foam will grow a tiny bit from the water and our goal is to make sure our foam can’t be seen) and soak for 10 minutes.
  2. Place a layer of moss in the bottom of your large vase and place the foam on top of it.
  3. Divide up your flowers so you know which ones will go in which vessel, saving the largest bundle for the large vessel in the center of the table.
  4. Insert stems into the foam keeping bunches of the same color/flower together to get that color block effect.

There’s a good chance you’re going to have a handful of flowers available from your DIY pack once you’re done with your DIY. Take these short stems and place them in tiny vases (pro tip: double shot glasses make perfect tiny vases). To keep with our color-blocking theme, we organized each tiny vase with its own separate color. The tiny vases are great for filling in some of that empty space in your table design and adding depth, texture, and of course, that hint of whimsy we’re going for. Then, all that’s left to do is set the table. Each place setting was arranged with its own color–the pastel lavender plate had violet candles and lavender scabiosa in the tiny vase. The pastel pink plate was set with the light pink candles and the pink Ohara garden roses in the tiny vase and so on.

why it works

While you're welcome to copy this DIY step for step, we encourage you to make it your own. That's the best part about these DIY kits from FiftyFlowers, the possibilities are endless and there's something for every vibe. Gone are the days of singular gigantic, perfectly arranged rose centerpieces (thankfully). Smaller, more free, whimsical arrangements are trending for wedding centerpieces and this is why wedding centerpieces have now been added to our list of florals that are safe to DIY. All you need to succeed is…

  1. A defined color palette (we chose pastels)
  2. Curated and complementary flowers and greenery (done and done thanks to FiftyFlowers)
  3. A cohesive collection of vessels for the arrangements (i.e. glass, ceramic, metal)
  4. Pretty tapered candles to fill in the space between arrangements.

If you stick to those basic rules, you really can’t go wrong. That being said, there are still a ton of floral line items on your wedding checklist that are best left to the professionals. Seriously, no one needs the floral arch to fall on them during the ceremony. 1. Choose the Right Candles: Select tall tapered candles in colors that complement your table setting or theme.

  2. Secure the Candles: Use candle holders or candlesticks that are sturdy and can support the height of the candles.

  3. Create a Base: If your candle holders are not tall enough, you can place the candles in a shallow dish or bowl filled with decorative elements like sand, beads, or stones to elevate them.

  4. Ensure Stability: To prevent the candles from tipping over, use adhesive putty or wax to secure them in the holders.

  5. Trim the Wicks: Before lighting the candles, trim the wicks to about ¼ inch to ensure a clean, even burn.

  6. Light Safely: Always place candles away from flammable materials and never leave them unattended while lit.
