A City Hall wedding always sounded ideal to Angela and Ryan. “In San Francisco, magical moments occur between strangers every day,” she told me. “Like the way people banded together to chaperone elders in Chinatown during the surge of anti-Asian violence. I found those acts of service so moving during a scary time. So, it felt natural that Ryan and I would get married at our City Hall.” Here are some photos from their intimate day…
“We agreed to get ready at home because we feel most comfortable there and wanted to spend the morning with our cat, Clancy. I got dressed in our bedroom, and Ryan put on his tux in the guest bedroom. We did our ‘first look’ by walking out of the bedrooms and seeing each other in our hallway. It was low-key, without any pretense.”
“Ryan and I planned our wedding during the height of anti-Asian hate in early 2021. It was scary, especially as a Taiwanese immigrant living in the Bay Area. I decided that one way to highlight the beauty in my community was to put my wallet where it mattered and support Asian creatives during our wedding planning.”
“My wedding look started with a pearl bag by Simone Rocha, who was born in Ireland and has Chinese heritage. My dress was from Self-Portrait, a brand owned by a Malaysian-British designer. I love how simple and classic it is. And my bouquet was made by Mint Kim of RayFlorets in San Francisco. (Veil designed by Twigs and Honey, and the shoes are from Loeffler Randall.)”
“Our ceremony lasted five minutes, and we were married by a retired judge, who was very sweet. We were the last couple getting married that day, so after our ceremony, she let us take our time taking photos and soaking it all in.”
“Afterward, we cut our cake right outside City Hall with 20 friends and relatives. We chose a small cake for the two of us, which was made by a fellow Taiwanese-American named Elizabeth Chin of Sincerely Meraki. And we served cupcakes to our guests.”
“Then Ryan and I switched into our Vans and hiked to the top of Twin Peaks, where we shared our private vows. We chose that spot because during one of our first dates, we spent the whole night talking and then watching the sunrise. ”
“We ended the day celebrating at one of our favorite Japanese restaurants, Family Cafe in North Beach. We had an outdoor happy hour with friends and family, followed by a Japanese/Californian dinner.”
“I didn’t think I would have so much fun with such a small wedding, but I did. I felt very present, and it all felt true to us, which is exactly what we wanted.”
Thank you so much, Angela and Ryan!
P.S. A casual NYC wedding and an important wedding question.

What a great story! Could anyone share the contact of the retired judge who performed the ceremony by chance? My fiance and I are currently looking to find a retired judge in SF
Thanks so much!

My husband and I eloped in 2015 and got married at the SF City Hall! We procrastinated so there were no availabilities for the dates we wanted so we hired a minister off of Thumbtacks, my beautiful and lush bouquet was from Amazon, our photographer was our witness and since it was a Friday, we had lunch at Off the Grid (food truck event) across the street then we drove to Napa for our mini-moon. It was low-key but still very us. Whenever we tell our friends who have had big weddings, most of them said they wished they did the same.
These photos bring back so many good memories!

I got married there in a lovely Rotunda, my brother got married there, two of my friends were married there, and I’ve seen and shot many weddings and met a lot of interesting individuals who came from all over the globe to tie the knot there.

Omg I am flooded with all the feels. My husband and I were married there in 2008 and it was stunning. We were so young and so nervous. We were surrounded by gay and lesbian couples who’d been together for ages and finally allowed to wed. Seeing their devotion and excitement was profound. So lovely to see another happy couple tie the knot in such a special place.

Congrats! In 2003, my husband and I were married at NYC city hall. I loved the simplicity and non-stress vibe that the “venue” afforded. I wore pants and clogs, he sunglasses and a Hawaiian button-down. Our wedding photo was taken across the street…the two of us standing atop an oversized picnic table, arm in arm, smiling ear to ear. Not only were we husband and wife, but in a few short months, we were to become…mom and dad!

My husband and I got married at SF City Hall in 2013, with only our parents, my grandmother (age 93 at the time), my stepson, and our siblings and their families. My brother and one of my husband’s sisters were our witnesses, and my best friend officiated. I hired an old friend, who is a wonderfully talented event photographer, to take our photos. We followed our late morning nuptials with a ferry to Tiburon for some photos, then back to the city for dinner with our guests in a private room at Spruce. Our special day was small, intimate, and perfect.

This is fabulous! So true to themselves and absolutely stunning. My husband and I recently got married in our local indie bookshop in Sydney in a similar elopement style ceremony then went to the pub where we first met. We streamed it to family and loved reading all the well wishes and chat comments the next day.

This is so lovely! Cup Of Jo types might similarly enjoy this story from WBEZ in Chicago today, of other couples having city hall weddings in Chicago this winter. https://www.wbez.org/stories/who-gets-married-at-chicagos-marriage-court/4487bdfd-f61d-4bd8-8577-0a5b72fdab3e

These photos bring back wonderful memories of my SF city hall wedding 12 years ago. My husband and I loved everything about getting married there. Our friends rode the MUNI bus over to be with us from the Noe Valley neighborhood where I grew up. Afterwards we all went out together to one of my favorite restaurants from childhood. We shared a wedding cake baked by one of our best friends. It was simple, beautiful, not expensive, and gave us yet another wonderful San Francisco memory.

SF City Hall weddings always look so magical! I have a soft spot for city hall weddings. My husband and I got married at Philadelphia City Hall in 2018. As I was planning all of the details I enjoyed seeing other city hall weddings for inspiration and for confirmation that small and intimate can also be beautiful.

My husband and I got married at SF City Hall 10 years ago. It was perfect, just like Angela and Ryan’s. For $84, my husband and I got married in one of the prettiest spots in the city. My Kate Spade off-the-rack dress and his J. Crew suit were the perfect attire for a couple of 25 year olds who were very recently out of the starving student stage. Every time we drive by City Hall with our kids, they shout “That’s where mom and dad got married!”

I got married at SF City Hall too, in 2006! Before the judge started the ceremony he said to my husband, “You like to keep things simple, don’t you?” We do, and I’ve never regretted not having a bigger wedding. Our photographer was our witness, and when we got back home to Minnesota we had a party in the backyard of our duplex which we bought snacks from Trader Joe’s for.

Right after the retired judge married us, she whispered to the two of us “I know I won’t be the first to wish you this, but I hope you have a lifetime of happiness.” Then she winked and walked away. It was just perfect.

Yes, my wedding day was not fun! I was far too passive in the planning stages… We initially wanted to have a big BBQ and then, surprise, we’d come out and get married during it! Then came… The Moms. The Moms wanted dresses, pictures, flowers, piles of presents, toasts, a DJ, on and on. It kept snowballing.
To all those contemplating a wedding, do your own thing! And HOLD THE LINE! Those of us who hid in the car during parts of their own wedding salute you!

I didn’t hate my wedding, but I feel kind of meh about it. It was super religious, and we’re no longer religious, so looking back on it it feels weird. And at the time I wanted to elope, but various family members said we couldn’t and I wasn’t yet brave enough to stand up to them. Oh well. We keep saying for our 20th anniversary (only six years away! eep!) we’ll have a wedding reception re-do, full of all the things we didn’t get at the first one (mostly, booze and dancing).

It might require some homework and research, but see if you can find a local photographer who took pictures of another couple getting married at “your” city hall. Then you can see how the pix look. I think a lot of not-great-looking buildings can be made to look great when using certain angles, or focusing on other things. I have been to weddings at “ugly” places (think an older basic lodge kind of thing), but the flowers, decor, and people make it their own and it can be so nice!

Not city hall, but you can ask a friend or relative to become ordained online and marry you any place you like. (Just check your county’s rules but many allow this without any registration.)
I did this and preformed the wedding ceremony for my brother and his wife at her families beautiful farm.

I too got married at SF City Hall, and the majestic venue made me feel like a millionaire despite our tiny budget. I can’t imagine a classier place to get married for basically free! After the ceremony––we also were the last ones for the day, and my cousin is conveniently a photographer––we had lunch at a French brasserie nearby with our closest family, attending from thousands of miles away. After exploring SF together for a couple of days, we rented a cabin with both of our families in rainy Yosemite for a weekend. It was perfect.

My stepsister also got married there, about 10 years ago, and it was lovely! If I remember correctly, the woman who married her said they were all government employees who got wedding ceremony duty once a month — and that it was their favorite day. :) Also, you could only officially invite 6 guests, but my stepsister was kindly told, “it’s a public location, so if more people just *happen* to be there, what can we do?” <3

Thank you for sharing your beautiful low key wedding. I especially loved the first paragraph when you described the morning before the wedding; it sounds like you got exactly the wedding that you envisioned, and you did not let the “wedding industry” tell you what to do. Wishing you a wonderful and happy life! (Just adding that this is a wedding after my own heart – we also got married at City Hall over 20 years ago, and it was beautiful and low key. We had lunch at Absinthe afterwards and a party in our home following that (not a “reception”, but a party!))

Rich in history and quietly ornate while being understated, we love it also for its affordability. Whenever anyone mentions a wedding at San Francisco’s City Hall, I remember one of the most wonderful days of my life: My husband I were in the city for a walk and walked by City Hall – it was February 14th 2004. Valentine’s Day and Gavin Newsom had just legalized same sex marriage in San Francisco two days prior. The line of couples waiting to get married was out the front door, down the street and around the corner. Hundreds of people, in wedding dresses, in tuxedos, in every day clothes … getting married to their loved ones. I was so in awe and so happy. And I’m crying now just thinking about it. It was such an incredible experience to see this. It was such an important moment in history. The start of something great. Wow. <3

Oh my gosh so many of these commenters got married at SF City Hall. So did we! I remember being in that wing off the main area waiting to submit our paperwork to the clerk before the ceremony and there were all these clusters of families around these happy beautifully dressed couples and I said to my husband, “What a fun little hall!” and we say it all the time now. Our witness was a friend who popped over from downtown during her lunch hour and we got hot dogs from the cart outside after. Such a sweet memory. We had another ceremony with family in Big Sur a few days later but there was something so perfect about that day. Now anytime we pass a building with a dome one of our kids will say, “Mommy and Daddy got married there!”

Aw, we got married at San Francisco City Hall too! That morning we arrived to City Hall after our family and friends (we were a small group of 11) and when we walked in we could see everyone smiling and cheering for us as we worked our way through the metal detectors- it was so oddly sweet and romantic! I was so upset to learn that the 49ers were having their Super Bowl reception there that day so the entire main floor was carpeted and off limits. But it meant that we were married in one of the beautiful alcoves upstairs. It was perfect, quieter and more private. Our justice of the peace was named Norbert and he was the sweetest man, very serious but also tender with just enough humor. It was an incredible day, thanks for bringing me back there!!

Seeing all the other brides and grooms at City Hall was also the highlight of our day. You could feel the palpable joy. I also loved seeing all the City Employees smile so sweetly at us, I think they could tell we were really nervous!

Angela, yes! Seeing all the other couples was incredible- what were they wearing, who had they deemed important enough to be there, what were their bouquets like- I could have watched it all day. Before the pandemic my husband and I would go back every year around our anniversary all the way from the East Coast. We’d go to “our spot” but even in the midst of reliving the magic, the people watching is one of my favorite parts of those trips. Congratulations on a sweet, beautiful wedding!

Oh my goodness – this is gorgeous! Every detail is lovely. The photos of the parents on either side and then with the whole group of friends made me tear up. Beautiful!

This brings back so many found memories of my own marriage at San Francisco City Hall, about two weeks after the 1989 earthquake. We were married amongst the scaffolding, as there was some damage inside the building. I was 26 at the time and a graduate student at San Francisco State University. My bother and my cousin were our witnesses and we had lunch at our beloved “no name” sushi restaurant on Church St. The next day, I was back in class, taking a 3 hour midterm. My professor whispered to me, “I heard you got married yesterday, congratulations”.
